There was a time when the sedate, broad shouldered shape of a Mercedes-Benz sedan was synonymous with quality, durability and superior engineering. Nowadays, customers are more likely to associate reliability with the shape of a Toyota Camry, while Mercedes has pursued ever sleeker and more swooping body forms. Until now. As the brand finally emerges from its build-quality funk (it was the only European automaker to win quality awards from J.D. Power & Associates in 2008), it clearly intends to help customers recall its tank-like sedans of yore. Meet the 2010 Mercedes E-class.

As expected, the new, "W212" E-class, being previewed to journalists in Detroit ahead of its spring unveiling in Geneva, looks similar to the ConceptFascination design study that debuted in Paris last fall. But that unlike that wagon-cum-coupe or any other Mercedes car of late, the new E-class makes no bones about being a classic, conservative sedan. To that end, it wears husky, squared-off sheet metal, an upright roof, and creased "pontoon" fenders similar to those on the new GLK crossover ("a new Mercedes schtick," offers design editor Robert Cumberford). The new car also goes to greater lengths to accentuate its distinctive Mercedes styling elements, particularly its broad chrome grill and dual headlights. Ironically, these details have been so widely imitated by other automakers - we're talking to you, Lexus and Hyundai - that even on a real Mercedes they come off a bit generic. It's more in the overall profile that the E-class comes off as genuinely German in a way no other brand can quite capture.

The hip-to-be-square trend continues inside. Gone are the current model's attempts at being avant-garde and organic, replaced by a severe dash that looks as if it were drawn with a t-square. Of course, it's far from retro, as it receives a host of technology from the S- and CL-class, including the column-mounted Direct Select shifter, and a now standard Comand controller. The new car also gets plenty of advanced safety features, including headlamps that automatically dim when they might blind another driver and Mercedes' new lane-departure warning and driver-monitoring systems.

Under the skin the updates are fewer and subtler. The 2010 E-class will launch on American shores this summer in familiar E350 and E550 variants. Both the 268-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and the 382-hp 5.5-liter V-8 appear to be unchanged. The standard suspension gets adaptive dampers, while an enhanced Airmatic system is now an option. The other flavors, including 4MATIC and the tasty E63 AMG arrive shortly thereafter. The 3.0-liter BlueTec diesel will make it here in early 2010.

Stuttgart, Germany – The last time the Mercedes-Benz E-Class was completely updated, it's habitat was a very different place.

Traditional rivals such as the BMW 5 Series are now less threatening and vehicles such as the Lexus GS series and Jaguar XF line have adopted aggressive tactics and are now much more dangerous to the E-Class.

The global credit crunch that begun in earnest in mid-2008 is affecting spending habits, particularly larger and more expensive purchases such as cars, so in this respect the new E-Class is unlikely to surpass its predecessors sales figures.

What you see here are the first official photos of the new generation 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which will be officially launched at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March.

These images have only just been leaked, not a lot of information is known about the new models.

Originally planned for an early January launch, we're all quite happy about the leak because we'll be on holidays over January, and the early consensus on the new look is moderately positive.

The rear end design has upset a few people in the Web Wombat offices, being called "Russian" by one contributor which could be an insult or a compliment.

The brake lights look somewhat out of place on the new 2010 E-Class, but as only three images were leaked it could be a case poor camera angle or colour/lighting choice.

At the front of the car, the overall shape is recognisable: the grille and the engine hood are traditional Merc.

But it's the new headlights that give the car difference.

Blending the previous E-Class's "double bubble" headlights with the Lexus GS series' twin clusters, the look is appealing.

Another new feature at the front of the 2010 E-Class are new LED fog lights.

As with all new models, the 2010 E-Class will be longer and wider than its predecessor and will feature a raft of new technologies.

The car's safety will be so advanced that the car will half drive itself, but this raises the ethical question of taking control away from the driver.

For instance the car will able to brake on its own if it detects the driver failing to do so in the event of a collision.

Engine technology isn't expected to improve greatly. The usual V6 and V8 petrol engines will be offered along with BluTec diesel models (though they may not come to Australia because of our low-grade diesel).

The range-topping AMG E-Class model, most likely the E63, will be powered by a 6.2-litre V8 outputting up to 450 killowatts of power, which is about 600 horsepower.

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG shows why shoppers can’t tell just by the size of a car whether it’s a high-mileage vehicle or a gas guzzler.

The C63 AMG is a five-passenger compact sedan, which puts it in the same size category as a Honda Civic.

But this small Mercedes is no fuel-thrifty Honda. Indeed, the C63 AMG has the third worst federal government fuel economy rating of all 2008 compact cars sold in the United States. Only a couple of Bentleys fare worse in fuel mileage in the compact car segment.

With city and highway mileage estimates of just 12 and 19 miles per gallon, respectively, from the federal government, the C63 AMG can guzzle more gasoline per mile than a Hummer.

The C63 AMG is pricey, too. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge and a $2,100 gas guzzler tax, is $56,725. This is some $24,000 more than a base C-Class sedan, the C300.

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sportscoupe is expected to be powered by the same 3.0 liter V6 found in the sedan that develops 228 horsepower. The 3.5 liter that produces 268 horsepower is also expected. However, Mercedes is not expected to invest money in an AMG variant for the car.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Is it real? Yes. In fact, this was the second time Mercedes has unveiled the new C-Class at an auto show. The first time was at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year.

What's the point? The C-Class, the closest thing Mercedes has to a sedan for the masses, hasn't been significantly redesigned since 2000. Mercedes needed a fresh look for its top-selling vehicle worldwide, which has to compete with recently redesigned models of the BMW 3 Series and the Lexus IS.

What they said: "The battle for market share in the entry class remains fierce," said Ernst Lieb, president and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz USA.

What they didn't say: The C-Class is Mercedes's bridge vehicle. It's the vehicle they hope to use to attract buyers who will eventually move on to bigger, more expensive models.

What makes it tick? Mercedes will offer two V-6 engines, a 3.0-liter 228-horsepower version for the C300; and a 3.5-liter 268-horsepower version for the C350.

How much, how soon? As the entry-level Mercedes, the C-Class is on par with models from Audi, BMW and Lexus in its segment. Prices will start at around $32,000 and reach up near $40,000. It will be available in the United States in August.

How's it look? Mercedes has essentially made two separate cars with its new C-Class. It will sell sport and luxury versions of the vehicle, two styles that are quite distinct and aimed at two very different demographic groups. The sport version is, well, sportier. It lacks the signature three-point Mercedes hood ornament and has the grille of a coupe. The luxury version looks a bit more like a classic sedan, hood ornament included.

The New Mercedes Benz C Class

Just when we though the day was over Mercedes-Benz decided to unveil the 2008 C-Class for the United States which will make its debut at the New York Auto Show in two days. For the U.S. market, Mercedes will launch the C-Class this fall with three V6 models including the C350 Sport (AMG inspired), the C300 Luxury and the C300 Sport. The C300 models will have a 3.0 liter V6 engine that produces 228 horsepower while the C350 model will have a 3.5 liter engine that produces 268 horsepower.

In addition, the C300 Sport and Luxury models will be available with an all new 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system mated to a seven-speed transmission.

Standard equipment includes a power sunroof, eight-way power front seats with lumbar support, two-zone automatic climate control, 17-inch wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and a central controller with a seven-inch display screen.

With average gasoline prices nationwide inching closer to the $3 per gallon mark -- and already past that mark in some places -- savvy new-car buyers may well ask themselves once more, "what fuel-efficient alternatives are out there?"

While gas-electric hybrids have received a lot of attention, what may loom larger in our automotive landscape in coming years are diesel-powered cars.

Diesels are wildly popular elsewhere in the world -- they account for about 50 percent of all new cars in Europe -- but they have never really stirred the souls of U.S. buyers.

Including trucks, diesels account for less than 2 percent of the U.S. new-vehicle fleet, despite fuel mileage levels that can run 40 percent higher than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle.

When most Americans think of diesels, the words that come to mind include slow, noisy and soot-belching. Those who remember the horrible efforts by General Motors to sell diesel-powered sedans in the 1980s may also associate diesels with major repair issues.

That could change with the arrival of a new generation of diesels that are cleaner, quieter and more powerful than previous efforts. A drive in the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec diesel sedan shows this new technology delivers a seamless luxury sedan experience along with a 37 mpg federal rating.

For now, the Bluetec is available in 45 states, since it doesn't meet the more-stringent emission standards for California, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont. But starting with 2008 models, Mercedes-Benz will add a new injection system that will make the three-liter diesel engine legal in all 50 states.

The Bluetec engine will be transplanted into a Jeep Grand Cherokee model, and Mercedes-Benz plans to expand the diesel technology to other Benz models, including an upcoming entry-level C-Class sedan.

Volkswagen, Audi and BMW also are planning on licensing the Bluetec technology for some of their U.S.-bound 2008 models.

U.S.-based manufacturers so far have not announced plans for diesel sedans, though DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler division is planning a diesel version of its minivan.

Most Japan-based manufacturers offer diesel versions of their sedans in other markets, but so far have shown interest only in bringing diesel trucks to the U.S. market.

Aside from the increased fuel economy, diesel vehicles carry a price premium of about $1,000 to $2,000, which is far less than the premium on most gas-electric hybrids.

Add in the greater durability of a diesel engine compared to a gasoline engine -- 200,000 miles between major overhauls are not uncommon with diesels -- and it could make economic sense to give a diesel a spin.

Among automotive cognoscenti, the Mercedes C-class has long labored in the shadow of BMW’s 3-series, a wistful also-ran in the entry luxury sports sedan sweepstakes.

To be fair, corporate wistfulness has been tempered by frequent bank deposits. Over the course of its long history—Mercedes is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its entry-level sedan this year—the company has produced and sold some six million of them.

Which suggests the kids in Stuttgart were doing a pretty good job.

But be that as it may, with the introduction of the fourth generation C-class (W204), the long quest for sport sedan equality may be over. Based on a short first drive in a C350 Sport, the smallest Mercedes sedan looks ready to challenge BMW’s segment leadership on fairly equal footing.

Smallest is a relative term here. The baby Benz is smallest among Mercedes four-door sedans, but it’s bigger in every dimension than its predecessor, and also bigger than 3-series four-ports in terms of length and height, riding an identical 108.7-inch wheelbase.

Bigger translates as roomier, something rear seat passengers are sure to appreciate.
But bigger also translates as increased mass. Mercedes worked hard to keep curb weights in check for the new car, but there looks to be some inevitable gain at the scales. Mercedes forecasts 3615 pounds for the C350 Sport under scrutiny here, which is 100 pounds more than the C350 Sport we tested in the November 2005 issue of Car and Driver, and heavier than either of the gasoline-powered 3-series sedans (328i, 335i) we see in the U.S. market.

That 2005 C350 sprinted to 60 mph in an impressive 5.5 seconds. The new C350 Sport is propelled by the same 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6 as its predecessor, with identical output (268 horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque), mated to the same seven-speed automatic transmission.

All things being equal except for a slight increase in mass, it’s hard to see the new C350 being quicker than the gen three edition. Mercedes forecasts 6.6 seconds, which we view as conservative.

A new long-wheelbase S-Class Guard Pullman is being developed by Mercedes-Benz, as the German automaker continues 80 years of protecting kings, popes and prime ministers on the road.

In the past - from the days of the first Pullman limousines, Benzes have chauffered leaders from Hirohito to Helmut Kohl. The new S600 Pullman, Benz says, starts with a long-wheelbase sedan and gets stretched even further to meet every need of the world's leaders.

Powering the newest four-passenger limousine is a twin-turbo V-12 with 517 hp. And since the body is stretched, its suspension is altered to give it more stability. The body is also modified with larger rear door openings.

In the rear, four seats facing each other put even the Maybach 62 to shame. But the chief attraction of the Pullman these days may well be its B6/B7 protection package, the highest degree of protection against acts of terrorism, Mercedes says. The Pullman can protect its passengers from bullets, hand grenade fragments and other explosives - and run-flat tires, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire extinguishing system ensure a safe getaway.

Interiors can be trimmed out to spec or from Mercedes' large range of paints, leathers and woods.

The new Pullman will be ready for delivery at the end of 2008.

The new CL-Class is another Mercedes-Benz masterpiece. Just as the luxury coupé points the way to the future with its innovative technology, the design has also set the mould for a new Mercedes style.

Its hallmark is the interaction between distinctive tightly drawn lines with large, unruffled surfaces.

This design lends the Coupé its own particular expressive power, emphasising the calm and power of its powerful, self-confident nature.

Mercedes-Benz CL-Class model chronology Familiar Mercedes features have been given a contemporary twist, resulting in a harmonious blend of the classic and contemporary.

Examples include the hallmark Mercedes radiator grille with its wide chrome louvres, and the design of the C-pillar.

The unique, slightly downwards-tapering pillar configuration is a typical feature of the large Mercedes Coupés whose roots go right back to the 1950s: in 1956 the 220 S/SE Coupé (W 180/W 128 model series) first captured attention with this striking C-pillar design, and a few years later the concept was further refined in the successor model, the 220 SE Coupé (W 111/112).

Other design features which were already acclaimed back then have also been reinterpreted for the CL-Class, keeping alive the large coupé tradition of the Mercedes-Benz brand: the fully retractable side windows, for instance, whose continuous aperture is not interrupted by a B-pillar, and the large, curving panoramic rear window.

In the early days this was a typical styling feature of the Mercedes Coupés, and in its stylistically evolved form for the new CL-Class it is just as appealing as in the 220 SE Coupé of 1961.

Mercedes innovations such as the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system, the Intelligent Light System with five lighting functions and PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection all come as standard. Furthermore, the luxury Coupé raises the bar in terms of vehicle safety with the PRE-SAFE® brakes: the unique system automatically brakes the Coupé before an imminent rear-end collision.

Two powerful engines with eight or 12 cylinders are available, delivering a notable increase in output and torque.

Exterior Design
According to Mercedes-Benz, the new CL-Class' design "joins the S-Class in being a protagonist for a new aesthetic appearance – a new Mercedes style, based on the principles of modern purism, i.e. on a clear, unostentatious design idiom with interplay between striking lines and calm surfaces. This lends the Coupé a very special presence, underlining the unruffled calm and strength of its unique character."

Many links with the past emphasise the heritage of passenger cars. This is done by including familiar Mercedes characteristics, which are reinterpreted and incorporated into the design concept to form an exciting composition of progress and tradition.

One example is the front end, where the louvred radiator grille with its central Mercedes star unmistakably confirms the car’s identity.

The designers in Sindelfingen have positioned this traditional feature of sporty Mercedes models at a steeper angle than in the preceding series, also equipping it with wide, highly expressive chrome louvres.

This contributes to the extremely powerful and self-assured appearance of the new CL-Class, which is further reinforced by the more pronounced wedge shape of the entire front end.

The headlamps, equipped with the Intelligent Light System, are one of the most striking features of this Mercedes Coupé and lend a special touch to its overall appearance.

The bi-xenon module and an additional high-beam headlamp are enclosed in highly polished cylinders reminiscent of expensive camera lenses.

Viewed from the front, the transparent lenses of the headlamps form a single unit with the radiator grille which impressively emphasises the visual width of the vehicle body.

The side view shows that the headlamps are perfectly blended into the wings, creating a flowing transition from the front end to the flanks. As a result the entire front section appears to have been moulded from a single piece. The indicator strip horizontally arranged in the lower headlamp section harmoniously follows the sweeping contours of the front bumper, which likewise extends well into the flanks to frame the lighting units.

Wings: expressive anatomy

"The eye is directed towards the wheel arches and wings, where new highlights are to be found in the body language of the Mercedes Coupé. The stylishly contoured wings enable the two-door car to flex its muscles discreetly yet purposefully. Intentionally rather taut and physical, the pronounced, rounded contours of the wings arch over the wheels and symbolise the power residing beneath the elegant outer skin of the CL-Class."

"Athleticism coupled with serenity, power with prestige: the body "anatomy" created by the designers ensures that from every angle, the two-door Coupé has a wide, self-assured presence on the road. The interplay between lines and surfaces is equally expressive, as the soft, rounded forms of the bumper and wings contrast with the taut outside lines of the bonnet – visual demarcation lines which lend additional contours to the front end and mark a transition to the large, calm surface of the bonnet itself."

The sharp outer lines of the bonnet have another importance for the design concept, as they form a gentle, flowing transition to the A-pillars, elegantly connecting the front end to the passenger compartment.

There are great news are out of Stuttgart on the 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-class. Drawing design cues from the new S-class, the third-generation C-class seen left in an artists interpretation of spy photos will ditch the four round headlamps and conservative sheetmetal of the current car in search of more dynamic and daring styling. Coming out in spring 2007 will be the sedan, followed by a five-door wagon that autumn. A softtop convertible and a coupe debut in 2008 most likely.
The interior will be ultimately redesigned. The updated Comand system, which will incorporate a center controller similar to those of rivals BMW and Audi in their iDrive and MMI systems.
Engines for the United States are likely to include 2.5-, 3.0-, and 3.5-liter V-6s, all mated to either a six-speed manual or a six- or seven-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive will remain an option for all C-class models.
The obligatory AMG version will be powered by a 408-hp, 5.5-liter V-8. Also possible is a limited-edition, 476-hp C63 AMG, which would compete with the likes of the Audi RS4.
